Since the scholarship's founding in 2018, the bank has awarded $53,000 to students interested in a banking-, business- or agriculture-related degree. NebraskaLand Bank | North Platte, awarded a $250 scholarship to 35 students who completed the NebraskaLand University Financial Literacy Scholarship Program during a special ceremony on April 22. Additionally, the top three essay writers received a scholarship for $1,000, $750 and $500, respectively, and a commemorative coin from Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance Director Kelly Lammers. The awards honored a variety of women and leaders in the Grand Island area. NebraskaLand Bank | North Platte, provided food during the Kids on the Bricks festival in North Platte on April 13. More than 400 kids and their parents attended the event, which aimed to increase awareness of young children, their activities, family childcare centers and early education in North Platte. Platte Valley Bank | Scottsbluff, sponsored the cash prize for the United Way of Western Nebraska's Raffle for Cash drawing. Three lucky winners each received $500. RetirementsCheryl Manka, NebraskaLand Bank | North Platte, retired after 22 years with the bank. She was the executive administrative assistant and board secretary for the bank and the bank's holding company. DeathsCharles "Chuck" Gonka (age 79) | Columbus, passed away on April 12. He previously worked at Equitable Bank and First Nebraska Bank in Columbus. Prior to entering banking, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1968.
Lavonne Ohlson (age 96) | Scottsbluff, passed away on March 29. She had a 45-year career in the banking industry, including jobs in Bartley, Cambridge and McCook before her retirement in 1990. Merrill Hale (age 65) | Papillion, passed away on March 24. He had previously worked as a loan officer at Dakota County State Bank, now F&M Bank, in South Sioux City for many years. Virginia “Ginger” Nissen, (age 92) | Lincoln, passed away on March 23. She was the wife of 1989 NBA Past Chair Jim Nissen.
